A soldier who has been serving in Afghanistan returned home from duty and surprised her son Friday during an early Veterans Day celebration at a Darien school.
Spc. Crystal Merise came walking in midway through the event at Hindley Elementary School to surprise her fourth-grade son, Sincere, who had no idea she would be there.
They hadn't seen each other in nearly a year. When they embraced, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.
"It's as if I was never away, and we picked up from that last place we left off," Merise said.
As the soldier mom was getting ready for the big surprise, she says her heart was pounding.
"There's been times where it's gone weeks where I haven't talked to him, it does get heartbreaking," Merise said. "I'm dying to have him in my arms and bite his cheeks."
Merise works on logistics and shipments into and out of Afghanistan. She will serve three more years in the Army Reserve.
Hindley students honored 41 veterans Friday who served in wars ranging from World War II to current missions in the Middle East.
