DA: 17 people indicted in Rikers Island smuggling scheme
Seventeen people allegedly involved in a contraband smuggling scheme at Rikers Island have been indicted, according to Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark.
Those charged include corrections officers, inmates and civilians.
The defendants are charged with a total of 84 counts, including bribery, receiving bribes, promoting prison contraband, sale of controlled substances and conspiracy.
Some of the contraband allegedly smuggled into the facility was synthetic marijuana, scalpels and the drug Suboxone.
At the center of the investigation is Correction Officer Kevin McKoy, 31, who allegedly received bribes totaling at least $10,000.
Prosecutors also accuse McKoy of smuggling in scalpels even after a fellow correction officer was slashed with one last year.
According to the Department of Investigation, the arrests are the largest contraband smuggling takedown in more than a decade.
