A man was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years in prison in the 2012 strangling of his step-niece.
Luis Vega, the step-uncle of Destiny Sanchez, had pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and a criminal sex act.
Sanchez, 15, was found in the vestibule of a Hunts Point building on Nov. 23, 2012. Prosecutors say Vega provided Sanchez with alcohol and then sexually assaulted her. They also accused Vega of pouring bleach on her in an attempt to cover up the crime.
Vega will be required to register as a sex offender and will be under supervision for 10 years after his release from prison.
Family members say that they wanted a long sentence for Vega, but are still comforted knowing he won't be able to hurt anyone else.
