Jacobi Medical Center is being praised for the care it provides its stroke patients.
Walter Prentiss met Dr. Lenore Ocava for the first time on March 26, 2016. He says his entire left arm had gone numb, prompting him to call 911. He was rushed to Jacobi, where it was confirmed that the 83-year-old was having a stroke.
The hospital's acute stroke team got to work right away, immediately giving Prentiss a dose of a clot-busting medication. A CAT scan was then performed, which revealed that his right carotid artery was blocked. The doctors removed the blockage during surgery.
Before long, Prentiss was back to his old self. It's because of cases like his that Jacobi won the prestigious Stroke Gold Plus Achievement Award.
The award means that Jacobi follows a set of rigorous guidelines set by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.
