Speed cameras overlooking school zones will go offline when classes end for the summer, but a number of state lawmakers and safety organizations are pushing to keep them running during the break.
Drivers tend to oppose them. Pedestrians tend to support them.
The law says that the speed cameras can only exist at a maximum of 140 schools around the city. They're only allowed to operate on school days. The current law expires in 2018.
A new bill up for debate in Albany could change the rules and remove the law's expiration date.
The proposed legislation would expand the speed camera program to allow them at any school in the city and to run all the time.
Advocate organizations are lobbying for the bill.
