Suicide rates among Latina teens in New York City have gone up since 2011, according to a new study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study, released Friday, says that 19 percent of Latina teens in city high schools are seriously considering suicide, and 13.2 percent of that group has already attempted it. The research indicates that those numbers are higher than in any other ethnic or racial groups.

The Bronx saw the highest increase in the entire city; Brooklyn saw a drop in numbers.

Dr. Rosa Gil, the president and CEO of anti-suicide program Life is Precious, says the most important thing is for parents and community leaders to be aware of the situation and take actions, if needed.

The next step, Dr. Gil says, is figuring out why Latina suicide is on the rise and to reach out to community centers, schools and churches to spread awareness.
