Education officials want to take control of an empty lot in Morris Heights to teach elementary school students about healthy eating and gardening.
The principal of P.S. 109 says that 30 years ago, the lot was a community park with a playground and stage. Now, it's vacant and full of litter.
Along with the Edible Schoolyard NYC program, P.S. 109 wants to turn the space into a produce garden.
The city's Administration for Children Services currently owns the property, and the school needs its permission before it can plant the garden.
In a statement, ACS tells News 12 that it is exploring its options of what to do with the lot.
Neighbors who support the garden idea say the lot is an eyesore and full of rodents.
