Westport bus driver free on bond after crash

A Westport school bus driver accused of crashing a bus into a tree in November is free on bond this evening.

James Torti was scheduled to be arraigned on charges of reckless endangerment, reckless driving and failure to maintain proper lane, but his case was continued.

Torti was arrested after allegedly veering off Lyons Plain Road and crashing the bus, which was carrying 23 middle school students.

Police say they initially issued a warrant to examine Torti's blood samples to check for alcohol or any other substance, but the tests came back negative.

Officials say he was working three jobs at the time and believe that fatigue was the cause of the crash.

Torti is due back in court next month.
