Name for new Metro-North station in Fairfield causes controversy

Despite an overwhelming majority in an online poll wanting Blackrock as the name of the new Metro-North station, Fairfield's Board of Selectmen voted instead to christen the new station Fairfield Metro.

The two selectmen who voted for Fairfield Metro explained they decided on the name, as they believed the online poll lacked credibility. They also said the name Fairfield Metro made more sense, as that's what both the Department of Transportation and the developer have called the proposed station for years.

Selectman Ken Flatto (D-Fairfield), who abstained from the vote, said he would have preferred something more local-sounding, but thinks the name is a nice compromise and what's most important is that the town is getting a new train station.

The Fairfield Metro station is expected to open this fall.
