Darien Historical Society opens Civil War exhibit

A new exhibit has opened in Darien that commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

The exhibit, which is being held at the town's Historical Society, features the history of what is widely accepted as the first home for veterans in the U.S.

The Fitch's Home for Soldiers and their Orphans was founded on July 4, 1864 in order to care for veterans of the Civil War.

It quickly became home, hospital and refuge for the soldiers and was closed down in 1940.
