Accused Bridgeport murderer appears in court

A Bridgeport man went before a judge this morning on murder charges.

Wilfredo Fernandez, 55, was brought into the courtroom in a wheelchair, appeared to be wincing in pain and at one point mouthed the words "I'm sorry."

Police say he shot Jose Batista three times yesterday afternoon in a parking lot at the Fireside Apartments on Palisade Avenue.

Batista, 68, of Milford later died from his injuries.

Witnesses say Fernandez, a resident at the Fireside Apartments on Palisade Avenue, shot the home health aide following an argument.

The judge today raised Fernandez's bond to $2 million, citing a long criminal record that goes back nearly 40 years and includes convictions for violent crimes.
