Severe thunderstorms leave thousands in Stratford powerless

United Illuminating (UI) says the severe thunderstorms that swarmed through southwestern Connecticut this evening left more than 1,700 customers in Stratford without power.

The intersection of Stratford and Beardsley avenues was temporarily closed earlier today as firefighters were at the scene of a transformer fire due to the storms.

Employees at a gas station at Stratford Avenue and Beardsley Avenue say two separate fires broke out when lightning hit one of the poles at around 7 p.m. this evening.

UI crews remained on the scene late Thursday night working to replace that transformer.
