Schools close early due to heat

Dozens of schools across southwestern Connecticut closed early today as temperatures rose into the 90s.

Schools in Bridgeport, Norwalk and Milford were among those letting kids out early. Authorities say the reason for the abbreviated school day, which affected 21,000 kids, is safety. They say while some schools are fully air conditioned, the majority aren't.

For residents looking for an air-conditioned escape, there were a variety of options as cooling centers opened across the region, including the Government Center in Stamford.
