Fire leaves nearly 30 homeless, 5 firefighters injured

Nearly 30 people are homeless and five firefighters are recovering from injuries after a fire at a Bridgeport rooming house today, according to fire officials.

The fire occurred at 143 Coleman St. at the corner of Coleman Street and Vine Street. Residents say the smoke was so thick that they thought there was no way they were going to make it out the door.

Firefighters say it started as a small fire in the basement of the first floor just before 3:30 a.m. and then quickly grew to consume the entire house. Officials say every fire department in the city was called in to help extinguish it.

The buildings? residents were taken to a nearby school as a makeshift shelter, where they will receive help from the Red Cross in finding permanent housing. No cause has been released yet.
