Deadline passes for low-income disaster aid

The deadline has come and gone for low-income individuals looking for disaster assistance through the Department of Social Services.

As of the 3:30 p.m. deadline, hundreds were in line waiting for their claims to be processed.

Officials say that while no new applications will be accepted, those who were in line, but not processed, will receive rainchecks to come back tomorrow or Thursday.

Those applying for assistance say they are in need of funds to replace food, repair their property or get reimbursed for costs associated with evacuating to a shelter.

Officials say that about 95 percent of those who have applied were approved.
