Bridgeport church helps families recovering from Irene

A Bridgeport church handed out today some essential items to about 200 local families that have been hit the hardest by Tropical Storm Irene. The event, organized by the Church of Christ, comes nearly a month after the storm and a day after Gov. Dannel Malloy (D-CT) announced that the Greenwich disaster recovery center will be moving to Bridgeport. Many of those who came out to get cleaning supplies, food and clothing are still out of their homes, while others say they have a lot of work to do to get back on their feet. City leaders say about 1,000 people suffered extensive damage to their homes caused by Irene. The National Council of Churches of Christ collects donations throughout the year to help cities affected by disasters.
