Donation website helps raise money for CT public schools

Some Bridgeport teachers are getting a helping hand with school supplies this year despite budget constraints.

Teacher Emily Larkin's seventh-grade classroom at High Horizons Magnet School is packed with supplies this fall thanks in part to Donorschoose.org, a website that was created 10 years ago by a teacher who wanted to find a way for other teachers to get supplies for classrooms without reaching into their own wallets.

Larkin says she created a profile on the website describing where the school is and what her students are like. She says all teachers have to do after that is to write grant requests for items needed such as a projector or a computer printer.

Once each grant is fulfilled, and the materials are sent to the school, Larkin says the students write thank you cards to the donors they will most likely never meet.

Donorschoose.org says more than $1 million has been raised for Connecticut public schools.
