Fairfield first selectman calls for state tree review
Fairfield's first selectman is calling on the state to review how trees are cared for along Route 15 as rainy weather heightens safety concerns among drivers.
First Selectman Mike Tetreau says riding along the Merritt Parkway is a risk after Hurricane Irene damaged many of the trees. The co-owner of Coastal Tree Experts, Bob Rogers, agrees. He says it won't take much rain for more trees to fall down on the roadway.
A spokesperson for the state Department of Transportation says the ability to prune or cut down trees is limited by current environmental regulations. He says current protocol is as efficient as it can be, but adds that driving could be safer if those regulations were eased.
