Stamford couple jumps from window to escape fire

The celebration of an upcoming wedding ended with the family watching its Stamford home go up in flames this morning. More than 50 people were partying into the early hours of the morning when a fire broke out in the basement of the house on Newfield Avenue.Babar Sheikh, the groom's brother, says panic ensued, with guests running for their lives, including about 15 children. Both the bride and groom got trapped upstairs and were forced to jump from the second floor. The couple survived, along with the rest of the family. "My brother just realized his passport's gone," Sheikh says. "Honeymoon's planned for next Tuesday, so that's canceled." Hasain Sheikh, the groom's other sibling, says he's grateful that everyone escaped unharmed.
