Greenwich students rally to support ousted principal

Dozens of students at Central Middle School in Greenwich staged a protest this morning to support Principal Shelly Somers.

Officials say Somers was put on leave earlier this month after they came across a 17-year-old article claiming she had left a sleeping toddler unattended for more than 45 minutes when she was the director of a day care center.

According to officials, Somers never disclosed that position, or told them that she voluntarily surrendered her day care license to avoid an investigation when she took the principal job.

Greenwich school officials have released a statement saying, "We have completed the internal investigation around our own interview and hiring practices and are now waiting for documents from the State Department of Health, requested at the start of the investigation."

In a letter to students, parents and staff, Somers apologized for the disruption. She said she believes she's being treated fairly and feels a full investigation is important so everyone involved is confident of the outcome.
