New Canaan adding cameras on school buses

New Canaan High School is introducing a new system of cameras on school buses to protect children from drivers who violate the rules of the road.

The technology is called Smart Bus Live and it is a complex system of seven surveillance cameras on the inside and outside of school buses to capture drivers who pass stopped buses.

The seven cameras are set up to capture the front and back license plates of drivers across four lanes of traffic.

The camera system can also automatically issue traffic tickets to drivers who break the law.

In addition, bus drivers will also be able to trigger a silent alarm in an emergency to notify dispatchers of a threat to student safety.

So far, only one school bus is equipped with the new technology as the system is still being tested.
