The crash happened just after 12:30 p.m. on Briar Ridge Road. Officials say the aircraft missed the house and road by about 10 feet.

Ridgefield fire officials say the plane took off from the nearby Danbury Airport, but several minutes later, the pilot made a mayday call and reported that his engine had cut out.

"He was fortunate to hit a tree with a little give to it - that is probably what saved his life," says Chief Heather Burford, of the Ridgefield Fire Department.

The pilot, a local man in his 50s, was able to get out of the aircraft with assistance from neighbor Kevin McCarthy, who then called 911.

Officials say the pilot was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, but is expected to recover.
