Authorities investigate Westport church fire

While authorities continue to investigate the fire last night at the Saugatuck Congregational Church in Westport, parishioners gathered to hold an outdoor service by the damaged church.

The flames broke out at the church shortly before 10 p.m. yesterday, and firefighters say that it took more than three hours to put them out. Crews from Norwalk, Westin, Wilton, Fairfield and Trumbull responded to the call.

Officials with the 180-year-old church say the fellowship hall and nursery school were destroyed when part of the ceiling collapsed.

The church was condemned because of the fire but parishioners say that despite the fire, the members still have a sense of purpose, including feeding the needy on Thanksgiving.
