2 arraigned for allegedly passing counterfeit bills in Westport

Police say two suspects from New York were arraigned in Norwalk today for passing counterfeit bills in Westport.

Police say they arrested Surujbhan Chaaitram, 19, and Jose Puello, 26, after multiple stores reported receiving fake $100 bills.

Officials say they caught Chaaitram at Cycle Dynamics, but Puello attempted to get away, leading a police officer on a chase. Puello lost control and crashed his gray BMW into a telephone pole at the intersection of Routes 1 and 33.

An officer headed to the scene and a driver were then hurt in a crash in front of the Dunkin' Donuts on Route 1.

Both the officer and driver were taken to the hospital.

The suspects are each being held on a $25,000 bond and will be back in court in June.
