New Canaan police could confiscate cell phones

The town is considering confiscating people's cell phones if they get caught talking or texting while driving.

It's part of a larger "distracted driving" campaign that comes after two recent hit-and-run accidents on Oenoke Ridge Road, one that killed an 82-year old man.

First Selectman Jeb Walker says police will be stepping up awareness efforts and enforcement as a new law takes effect Oct. 1.

The first selectman says he is unsure of the legal ramifications of confiscating phones, and it's something that the town attorney is currently investigating. At this point, he and police commissioners believe that confiscating phones is something that they have the authority to do.
