Police offer tips for safe trick-or-treating

Police are offering tips to help trick-or-treaters stay safe this Halloween.

Parents are encouraged to stick with their kids and to keep travel to the same side of the street, instead of crisscrossing back and forth.

Older children who are going wihtout a parents should trick-or-treat with a group and stick to a planned route.

Picking the right costume is important, too. Police say masks can obscure vision, and loose clothing could be a hazard. It's a good idea to take along a flashlight, too.

Police are urging drivers to slow down as they drive through neighborhoods.

Many police departments in southwestern Connecticut say they will have extra officers out on patrol on Monday.
