Student dies after being struck by van near Stamford HS

A student has died after she was hit by a van early Saturday morning while trying to cross a street, Stamford police say.
The incident happened on Strawberry Hill Avenue near Stamford High School around 7:20 a.m.
Police say the 18-year-old student was trying to cross the road and was on her way to take the SATs. She was not in a crosswalk when she was struck, according to police.
The victim was rushed to the hospital, but police said Saturday afternoon that she had succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
Sgt. Andrew Gallagher says that the victim was not crossing at a crosswalk at the time of the incident.
Police say the driver of the van stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Authorities say they will not release the victim's identity until Sunday because she has a large extended family that must be notified.
Stamford school officials say there will be support available to students and their families at the school on Sunday from 12 to 2 p.m., and that there will be extra support staff in school throughout the week.
