Police: Man arrested for killing wife, abandoning daughter
Stamford police say a local man who was wanted in connection with his wife's death was arrested Friday in New York.
They say they've been searching for Elmer Gomez Ruano, 32, since his wife's body was found in their Stamford apartment on Monday.
Police released surveillance pictures of Ruano with his 5-year-old daughter at the Stamford train station early Monday morning. They say the two were on their way to New York City.
Officials say they found the girl later that day left alone by Ruano at the Port Authority bus terminal. They say Ruano killed his wife Dionicia Bautista-Cano and they're glad he has been located.
"We're very pleased to have this suspect in custody," says Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin. "There was some thought that he might try and leave the country and we were very worried about that so we're extremely happy that he's in custody in New York at this time."
Police say Ruano faces child abandonment charges in New York before he can be extradited back to Connecticut.
They say the child is currently in the custody of the state Department of Children and Families.
