Stratford police officer, woman involved in Barnum Ave. crash

Stratford police say a woman and a female police officer are in stable condition after a major crash on Barnum Avenue Friday morning.

Authorities say the officer was heading westbound on Barnum Avenue to respond to an accident on Broadbridge Avenue when she crashed into a vehicle coming from California Street.

Witnesses described hearing the police sirens and suddenly a loud bang. News 12 is told both cars were totaled.

Lt. Frank Eannotti says the police offer was responding to another accident and was driving with her emergency lights.

"It appears she was coming from an opposing direction," he says. "So we have to look, was the light green or red? Did she have actual knowledge of the vehicle coming?"

Both victims are now in Bridgeport Hospital in stable condition.

Police say they are investigating whether the woman knew the police officer was approaching.

They say they are interviewing witnesses and will be looking at dash cam video footage as they move forward with the investigation.
