Man in 'grave' condition after catching fire in Fairfield

A man is fighting for his life after he became engulfed in flames and desperately ran onto the field during a Little League practice in Fairfield.

Firefighters say the man's SUV burst into flames in a parking lot yesterday in Tunxis Hill Park.

The victim has been identified as Justin Hervey, 23, a junior at Fairfield University. Authorities describe his condition as "grave."

Two coaches were able to help put out the flames and Hervey was rushed to Bridgeport Hospital's burn unit.

Fairfield University said it is offering support to the victim's family and any student who needs help dealing with this situation.

Police say they are trying to figure out what caused Hervey's vehicle to burst into flames. To watch extended footage and hear 911 calls on the Fairfield car explosion, click on News 12 Extra on Optimum TV channel 612.
