Parents, teachers start fundraiser to fix playground

Concerned parents and teachers at Hallen Elementary School in Bridgeport have taken it upon themselves to upgrade a worn-out playground.
They have enlisted a nonprofit agency, Kaboom, to try and raise money for a new playground and new asphalt. They say they've already raised most of their goal of $8,500 and plan to hold another fundraiser at the school on Saturday.
Parents and teachers say the Omega Avenue school's equipment is outdated and dangerous and that students have been injured because of the poor conditions.
In places, blacktop is cracked and crumbling, leaving pieces of asphalt strewn about.
Children in the third grade and older must take their recess on the blacktop because they're too big to safely use the existing playground equipment, according to school principal Deborah Santacapita.
