Hartford man in custody after chase in stolen car
Officials say a Hartford man is in custody Tuesday evening after leading officers from five local departments on a chase in a stolen car.
Officials say that the chase started in Norwalk on I-95 southbound near Exit 16 when several people saw a car driving erratically.
They say the suspect led officers through several local communities: on I-95, on Route 8 in Bridgeport and then onto the Merritt Parkway where he was caught.
They say that the black Honda Civic, which had been stolen in Mamaroneck, also hit two cars on the Merritt Parkway. One of those cars was a Trumbull police vehicle.
Officers from Westport, Fairfield, Bridgeport, Stratford and Trumbull assisted in the arrest of 25-year-old Rafael Vasquez. They say the goal of the chase was to protect the public.
"This behavior is very dangerous to the public and we attempted several times to use stop sticks to stop the suspect and he would swerve around the officers trying to deploy the stop sticks," says Lt. Kenneth Cain, of the Connecticut State Police.
Police say Vasquez also caused two minor car accidents on Route 1 in Westport. No one was hurt.
