Major improvements underway at Sikorsky Memorial Airport

A major improvement project is now underway at Sikorsky Airport.

Crews started demolishing the blast fence at the end of the runway, which has been the site of several collisions over the years.

Officials say It is the first step in resolving several long-standing issues at the property.

Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch and Stratford Mayor John Harkins say that since the airport is owned by Bridgeport but located in Stratford, there have been road blocks to taking steps to resolve property issues.

Harkins says the work today is a big step forward.

Officials say the improvement project has been in the works for more than 10 years.
