What's Ailing You: HIV update

This week's "Whats Ailing You" brings an update on HIV.

Stamford Cares and other HIV outreach programs are focused on getting doctors to encourage everyone to get tested for HIV, so if they're positive they can start treatment right away.

"There's actual studies now that tell us people who are on medications when they have HIV and are virally suppressed, are less likely, in fact, almost unable to pass the virus to someone else," says Dennis Torres, of Stamford Cares.

There are now preventative steps for individuals who are at high-risk of the virus. Medication called Truvada can protect a partner who may be exposed to HIV.

Torres also says that today's advanced HIV medications are so effective that in many cases they can bring the viral load to an undetectable level.
