Community members to replace damaged Sandy Hook statue
Community members in Stamford, as well as family and friends of a Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victim, joined forces to discuss how to repair a damaged memorial statue.
Police say a statue in memory of Sandy Hook victim Jesse Lewis was vandalized about two months ago. The statue is located in West Beach Park, one of 26 playgrounds built to remember the lives lost more than three years ago.
Kellie Cooke, of Stamford, says it was just before Easter when she discovered the statue was damaged.
Because of the vandalism, Cooke decided to start a GoFundMe page to help raise money to replace the statue. Firefighters say they want the second statue to be built from materials so strong that it won't be able to be vandalized again.
By Wednesday night, more than half of the $10,000 goal had been raised.
