CT Speaker of the House rules out re-election

The state Speaker of the House says he will not run for re-election this fall.

House Speaker Brendan Sharkey made the announcement Monday, fresh off a tough legislative season where lawmakers had to rework the state budget three times to get the deficit under control.

Sharkey has served Hamden as a state representative for 16 years and was voted Speaker of the House in 2013.

He says he's proud of the legislation he's helped pass in the General Assembly, including strong gun laws and repealing the death penalty.
