Staples High graduate wins 'The Voice' singing competition
A woman who graduated from Staples High School in Westport is now the winner of season 10 of "The Voice" on NBC.
The show announced Alisan Porter as the winner during last night's season finale.
Porter sang Barbra Streisand's hit "Somebody" for her final performance Monday night.
She's the first contestant to win with a female coach.
Porter's former vocal instructor at Staples High School, Alice Lipson, as soon as Porter came on stage, she knew she was destined for greatness. Not only was her voice remarkable, she says Porter was a fantastic dancer as well; she was just the whole package.
Lipson says Porter had a great work ethic in high school and was always focused on improving her craft.
She says Porter has taken on different musical gigs in the past, performing on Broadway, writing music, releasing an album. But, her career hit a high note when she sang "Somewhere" for her final performance in the Voice--a song from "West Side Story," funnily enough, the musical she performed in at Staples.
Lipson says she can't wait to see what else Porter will achieve.
