Police: Man with knife cut himself aboard Metro-North train

Norwalk police are commending the efforts of off-duty police officers who stopped a man with a knife on board a Metro-North train.

Officers responded at the Rowayton Metro-North station after a 911 caller reported that a man pulled out a knife and was cutting himself.

Norwalk officers say that before they arrived, five or six off-duty officers subdued the man by holding him down. The man was handcuffed and taken away by on-duty police.

Authorities say that the man was taken to Norwalk Hospital with self-inflicted lacerations to the chest and abdomen. He was treated and given a psychiatric evaluation.

MTA police, who also responded to the situation, have not released the man's name, but have said that he is 34 years old and from Connecticut.
Norwalk police say one of the off duty officers was from the Prospect Police Department, the others were from New Haven.
