Stratford man charged months after deadly crash

A Stratford man is facing charges after Bridgeport police say he was behind the wheel of a car that struck and killed a woman earlier this year.
The incident happened Feb. 10 when a Chevy Celebrity driven by Jerry Goncalves, 26, hit Sandra Vilsaint, 31, while she was crossing Barnum Avenue near the intersection of Elizabeth Street. Police say Goncalves sped up at the intersection as the light was changing and passed through as it was red.
Vilsaint spent two days in the hospital before dying from her wounds.
Following a monthslong investigation, Goncalves was charged with negligent homicide with a motor vehicle.
Mack Allen, a longtime friend of the victim, says Vilsaint was a beloved member of the community. He adds that he was grateful to learn that Goncalves turned himself in after hearing a warrant had been issued for his arrest.
Vilsaint worked at the Dunkin' Donuts location on LaFayette Boulevard in Bridgeport. Her co-workers say they are still grieving her death.
Police say Goncalves is also charged with speeding, improper passing and driving with a suspended license. His bond was set at $50,000 and he is due back in court next month.
