Animal workers are encouraging pet owners to remember their animal's safety during Fourth of July firework shows.

Animal rescuers recommend pet owners keep their animals inside and turn on the television or play music to drown out the noise of fireworks.

People who work with animals say fireworks can be overwhelming for pets and that they may try to run away during them.

They also say it is important to make sure pets have a collar and ID tag.

"They should make sure their dogs are microchipped and that they have identification tags so if they should get startled by the sounds, by activity and they take off, that you're able to find them again and people are able to identify them as belonging to you," says Lisa Barnett, of Paws of Norwalk.

Along with the noise, animal workers say the flashes of light and smells from the fireworks can also affect pets.
