Jazz Society of Fairfield County lands historic piano

A piano used by jazz legends like Dizzy Gillespie, Bill Evans and Thelonious Monk has a new home in a Westport club, thanks to a generous group of jazz fans.
Rabbi Greg Wall, who hosts Thursday Night Jazz at 323 Main in Westport, says they were using a donated baby grand, but it just didn't hold up to the demands of live jazz music.
He says a piano tuner told him a 1937 Steinway was for sale at a private home in New Canaan.

Prior to moving to Connecticut, the piano was at the Village Gate jazz club in Manhattan and had been played by almost all of the jazz greats.
Days later, he pitched the idea of raising money to buy the Steinway to the Thursday night audience.
Rabbi Wall has started the Jazz Society of Fairfield County, which raised $11,000 to purchase the historic Steinway.
They're now looking for donations to maintain it.
