Police chiefs from across southwestern Connecticut got a firsthand look Wednesday at a high-tech crime fighting system that uses censors to detect gunshots.

The heads of the Bridgeport, Stratford and Norwalk police departments gathered at a Stratford shooting range for a demonstration of the Shot Spotter system. The system places the censors in strategic locations throughout a city.

The censors detect gunshots and communicate their locations to the appropriate authorities. Normal city noises are filtered out so that the censors only focus on gunfire.

The system has a hefty price tag of $200,000 per square mile. The city of New Haven has already earmarked some money toward its purchase. Officials say Bridgeport and Norwalk should have the system implemented within a year or two.
