Police identify kayaker who drowned in Ridgefield

(AP) - State authorities have released the name of a kayaker who drowned at a state park pond in Ridgefield earlier this week.

The Department of Environmental Protection identified the man on Wednesday as 54-year-old Theodore Kunst, a former Ridgefield resident.

Officials say Kunst drowned in Pierrepont Pond at Seth Low Pierrepont State Park on Monday. Police divers found his body Tuesday afternoon.

Witnesses told authorities that Kunst was splashing around in the pond and calling for help before he disappeared into the water Monday afternoon.

DEP police are trying to determine what happened.
