Girl in critical condition after Fairfield car accident

A 15-year-old girl is in critical condition after being struck by a car Sunday night.
The accident happened on Melville Avenue near Old Farm Road about 10 p.m.
Police say the victim was walking in the street with a friend near Fairfield Warde High School when she was hit.
The teen was rushed to Bridgeport Hospital after the driver who hit her immediately stopped to offer assistance and called the police department.
Police say the driver is a 21-year-old from southwestern Connecticut. They don't believe alcohol or drugs were involved and are calling the incident an accident.
Hospital officials say the teen is in critical but stable condition.
