Residents met at Earth Place in Westport Tuesday to discuss their opposition to the Indian Point Nuclear power facility license renewal application. Depending on where one lives in southwestern Connecticut, Indian Point is anywhere from 20 to 45 miles away from doorsteps. Those opposed to the nuclear facility say when it comes to radiation, that's well inside the danger zone. Some residents believe the plant is directly responsible for cancer cases in Connecticut. Joseph Mangano, of the Radiation and Public Health Project, points to the Tooth Fairy Project. The study found that the child-adolescent death rate due to cancer in Connecticut is 4 percent above the national average. All other child-related deaths are 20 percent below the national average.Robyn Bentley, an Indian Point spokesperson, says the cancer argument is nothing new. She called Mangano?s study nothing more than junk science.
