Dozens protest possible Bridgeport school closures
Hundreds of teachers, parents and students in Bridgeport rallied Tuesday night in opposition to talk of school closures and teacher layoffs.
Options are on the table to close four elementary schools because of a $5 million budget deficit. Black Rock, Edison, Hall and Hallen elementary schools are being considered for closure. Three new schools that were to be open may also have to be cut. In addition, more than 100 teachers, administrators and nurses may have to be let go.
Parents from Black Rock Elementary School say they were caught by surprise when they saw a sign warning of possible closure hanging on the school's front door. Parents say they will continue to fight for their children?s schools.
Another rally is scheduled for Wednesday. There will also be a public hearing about the budget Wednesday night.
