Westport/Weston YMCA presents plans for new facility
The Westport/Weston YMCA presented its plans for a new facility to the Planning and Zoning Commission Thursday night.Hundreds crowded Westport Town Hall to hear the plan, which represents the culmination of a 13-year effort to move the Y to a new location. YMCA officials entered into a contract to sell the current downtown facility and must vacate the property by the end of 2011. The proposal to build a $42 million, seven-acre facility at Camp Mahackeno has been met with some opposition.
Those opposed to the Camp Mahackeno proposal fear there will be too much traffic in the area. They add that the new facility should be downtown, near the old building.
Y officials say they have explored 30 other possible locations, but none were suitable or available.
Thursday?s meeting marked the final push for approval from the town. However, the commission could hold up to six meetings before it reaches a decision by June 1.
