Southwestern Connecticut drivers suffered through a messy evening commute Tuesday amid snowy conditions.
The accumulation created a layer of slush on the roads, making for a dangerous rush-hour drive. Many drivers switched to back roads in preference to the highways but found slippery conditions there too.
During the day, shoppers made early runs to the supermarket in anticipation of more snow and ice. Many said they wanted to get off the roads as soon as possible.
The snow turned to sleet and then rain Tuesday night. Thoroughfares like Route 1 saw traffic almost at a standstill for some of the evening commute.
