Residents flock to malls for last-minute gift buys

Southwestern Connecticut residents packed the malls Monday to squeeze in some last-minute Christmas shopping.

"Sales" and " Santa" were the words on shoppers? minds as they cashed in on bargains at area malls.

?It's not as bad as I thought it would be so far,? shopper Paula Piro said at the Stamford Town Center Mall. ?We didn't think we'd get a parking space. We zipped right in.?

Mall General Manager Michael McAndrews said gift cards are key purchases for holiday procrastinators.

National reports indicate online sales for the season are through the roof, and store shopping is taking a backseat.
