The Veterans of Foreign Wars of Norwalk, in danger of having to close its doors due to low membership, is reaching out to veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan for membership.

VFW Post 603 was chartered in the early 1920s. It has been instrumental in helping hundreds of veterans who have served in foreign wars transition back into society.

"This is a place they can go to talk to each other about their problems, to each other about where they've been, what they've done,? said Carol Putzig, who works at Post 603. "Where are these men going to go when they come home?"

Commander Fred Green said he can barely meet the five-member requirement to hold a legal meeting of the group. "When your numbers go down, all of a sudden you don't have as big a voice,? he said.

Green said he expects to make a decision about closing over the next six months.
